They'll Delete Your Account and Take You to Collection

I had a CenturyLink account for 9 months - one of those college kid deals from 2012-2013. The account was under my name but my roommate was an authorized person in case something happened and she needed to call them. At the end of our 9 months we returned our modem and that was that. I called them to make sure the modem had been received and they said yes. I thought that was the end of it. Fast forward to February of 2015, I run a soft credit report on myself and find an open collection for $108 from CenturyLink that was opened in November of 2014. I called CenturyLink and was bounced around from billing to credit to sales and back to credit. They kept telling me that my account no longer existed - obviously, I closed it 2 years ago! - and that they couldn't do anything. Vicky in credits was absolutely useless and downright disrespectful. She kept talking over me and telling me I was wrong. She sent me to a really nice gal in sales who managed to figure out that they had deleted the account information and that the modem had been returned but in my roommate's name, which would cause some confusion. She credited the account and then sent me to Olga in credits to talk to her about having it removed from collection. Olga was extremely condescending and spent 20 minutes explaining to me how collection agencies work. She explained that adjustments have to be reviewed - they can't just be given - and that it could take 7-10 days. She told me that it might not go through and that if it didn't I would just have to pay for my mistake of not returning the modem on time. She got really snippy with me and talked over me, telling me it was my fault. I told her I would call back every day for a week until the adjustment went through if I had to. She started to again talk about how it sounded like it was my fault and that she couldn't do anything. I don't usually hang up on people, but I'd about had it with this woman. I was on the phone with CenturyLink for over an hour and all I got was a credit and being told to call back in a week to see if the adjustment had gone through. So now I've got a shit credit score for something I sorted out nearly 2 years ago and have to wait for them to get off their asses and actually do their jobs. I will never be using CenturyLink for any services again. After this call, I would almost rather return to Comcast, which is saying something.
